Interview with Rainer Ogrinigg, Director of the Hotel Schloss Gabelhofen.

Best for me: Herr Ogrinigg, you have managed the hotel for 3 years. How can one imagine the ambience in a 600 year old Renaissance castle?

Elegant, modern and, thanks to the original building, comfortable at the same time. It’s probably because of this combination, that castle Gabelhofen is a favourite romantic hide-away for couples.

How long has Gabelhofen been shining in its new light?

The castle was first named in 1443 and has a turbulent history. In 2001, the castle was completely refurbished and now presents itself as an ultra-modern, 4 star conference hotel and wedding location.

How do you dine at Gabelhofen? Knightly?

Like royalty. The cuisine from Head Chef Manfred Vogl has won several awards. His philosophy is  “from honest, locally sourced products with international ingredients, culinary delicacies can be created”. Our guests can savour his creations under the arches of the old gothic columned hall.

What do you recommend to guests who want to indulge in a couple of romantic days?

I would recommend the Tower Suite-  the suite stretches over 2 floors, has its own entrance and a private sun terrace. All other 57 rooms and suites have been renovated and offer all conceivable comforts. A candlelit dinner in the castle reatuarant or a pleasurable Ayurveda massage adds to the romance.

Which leisure activities are available in the surrounding areas?

Gabelhofen lies in Fohnsdorf, in the Zirbitzkogel-Grebenzen natural park. In summer, our guests like to play golf, go horse-riding and fishing; in winter, sports activities such as skiing, cross-country skiing, snowboarding, sledging and curling are all possible.

And of course, we recommend that our guests visit the new ‘Therme des Lichts’ (spa of lights). The Aqualux thermal bath is only 200 metres from the castle and we offer attractive packages.
